Let’s look at an example. If you want to be doctor, what do you do? You go to medical school and learn a bunch of things that you’ll never ever revisit, because after medical school you become a specialist in let’s say -- neonatology. Modern day schools are standardized to teach only the very basics of higher knowledge and they do so in a way that focuses primarily on memorization and regurgitation. This isn’t critical thinking. Don’t believe us though, we actually don’t want you believing anything you read here, we would prefer that you take everything that you read here and try applying it to your own life.
Because that’s the bottom line, real knowledge can only be obtained from direct experience. Never believe anything that anyone tells you, test it out for yourself and make up your mind. In doing so, your brain will record everything and your own experiences will shape what you think. Do these things and you’re well on your way to true knowledge of the self, which will serve to foster even better brain habits and an even richer life.

Addictions, Drugs, Video Games, & Facebook
There is nothing more damaging to certain structures of the brain (mainly the prefrontal cortex and the limbic brain) than addiction. You can take all the Piracetam and choline in the world and you wont’ get the positive results that you want if you actively participate in addictive behaviors or ingest addictive chemicals (alcohol, coke, heroin, tobacco) into your body.
So, really the place to begin even before you start supplementing with nootropics would be to figure out what you’re addicted to. And trust us everyone is addicted to something, every single one of us has at least a few mild addictions even if they are only behavioral in nature. Once you understand what addiction is and how it works, you’ll begin to recognize that this is a fact.
Many people in our society are addicted to food; that is a huge one. And I know this sounds like a marketing line, but it’s really not our fault. Food chemists are hard at work in laboratories creating super stimulus foods, foods that are incredibly addictive and more palatable than food was ever meant to be in its natural state. Addiction to alcohol and other harmful street drugs like cocaine and heroin are the obvious addictions really. But, what about coffee or tobacco? If you think that these compounds or harmless or don’t cause problems in our brains because they are legal or less addictive than say heroin, it’s time for you to reassess that notion. But, we’re not selling anything to you, if you’re a big coffee drinker or smoker quit the habit and see where it takes you in your life. Addiction is nothing short of degrees of slavery, my friends, and many things that seem harmless in our society are nothing of the sort.
Everyone is addicted to something and you are too. It’s painful to dig into these sorts of things but very necessary if you want a truly healthy brain. The thing to remember is that you don’t want to try to root out and up end every addictive thing in your life in one fell swoop, that is a recipe for disaster. What works best is doing some self-discovery and then slowly progressing towards change over time.
Addictions absolutely beat the crap out of the brain, addicts have less gray matter, less D2 dopamine receptors, and less neuronal connections than non addicts, as can be seen in study after study. Most studies are done with people severely addicted to street drugs, but the brain scans are absolutely horrifying.
Can we create similar brain changes by being addicted to our mobile phone or checking our Facebook? Science is seriously pointing in that direction. Behavioral addictions, according to new science utilize the exact same brain mechanisms as do highly addictive street drugs. Now that is an eye opener. Addictions will make you a scatterbrain, unable to think clearly. If you suffer from occasional or even frequent scatterbrain-ness, don’t you think that investigating why that might be would be worth your while?
Surely checking your Facebook every two hours isn’t as damaging as shooting heroin every day but might these little behavioral addictions add up? It’s very likely. You might be wondering, how do I know if I’m addicted to a behavior?
And actually the acid test is really quite simple. Take the behavior out of your life cold turkey and see how you feel of the next several weeks. If it causes you depression and anxiety like symptoms and you find it very difficult to stop the behavior then you are addicted to it. When you start discovering all your little addiction behaviors, it is a very eye opening experience. It’s guaranteed to shock you and we’re not going to lie, it can be very demoralizing when you literally can’t stop yourself from checking your Facebook for more than half a day. But, it’s life changing to wake up in this way.
Many of the things you may find will seem quite small. But consider this, in one study several drug addicts brains didn’t heal up properly unless then removed tobacco from their lives or where never tobacco users to begin with. Tobacco is legal, societally condoned, and therefore it doesn’t seem like such a big deal; the data says differently.
The study demonstrates that if you take a cocaine addict who is a smoker and you take them off of cocaine but they continue to smoke, in 12 to 14 months their brains will not have recovered like a non-smoking cocaine addict would, if he received the same rehab treatment. Even small addictions can create tremendous obstacles in the way of positive brain changes.
That is powerful information.
Now, how serious is even milder food addiction? Unfortunately the answer is possibly more serious than you think. If you’re a fairly big soda pop drinker, let’s say you drink a couple of cans of soda pop a day, try taking it out of your life cold turkey and see how you feel? Don’t add in a few candy bars to make up for the sugar loss, just eat your normal way of eating minus the soda pop. Countless people who try this little experience will be floored at how they feel when they remove this seemingly innocuous beverage from their daily routine. Withdrawal symptoms can come on like a hurricane, headaches, nausea, anxiety, depression, fatigue, you name it.
The fact is you will be shocked at how difficult it is to stop drinking soda pop, if this is something that you’ve been doing for years on a daily basis. Don’t let it freak you out though, just let it be a wake up call that things need to change if you want a better brain and for your nootropics to work better.
For more minor additions -- not hard drugs -- like addictions to sugar, fast food, or your mobile phone it would be a prudent idea to simply become aware of the addiction and back off slowly. The body and the brain hate very drastic changes, so this should help you to wean off more easily.
Of course if you’re addicted to street drugs or alcohol, there is no other way than cold turkey and checking into rehab as you’re playing with your life. The best way to quit anything is cold turkey, but progressively stepping down may seem easier for some people, and if it seems easier then that belief will make it easier. The mind is a powerful ally.
Here is something to remember with regards to addictions, small behavioral additions or severe cocaine additions, all of these addictions can be more easily beaten through taking proper nootropics, daily meditation, and living a full rich life. Your pathway towards a healthy brain will only lead towards more opportunities to gain an even healthier brain.
This isn’t an all or nothing thing either. The richer and fuller your life is the less you’ll crave drugs or video games or porn. And all of this has to do with what’s going on in your brain, the brain changes that are being made. Super low carb diets, super low fat, super high protein, whatever you have heard is generally taken out of context and not applicable for long term health. Basically you want balanced macronutrients, carbs, protein, and fats as well as balanced nutrients, balanced for you, your body type and genetic liking.
This means eating so-called whole foods. Eat foods that grow from the ground, not processed foods that come from a box. If you choose to become a vegetarian, supplement with b12 and omega 3 fatty acids. If you choose to eat meat, then we really suggest you avoid factory farmed garbage meat.
Factory farmed meat comes from fat, sick, weak, animals, grown with antibiotics and growth hormones in tight pens. Don’t really care if you find this ethical or not (we surely don’t), but it’s just not healthy for your brain to consume these foods, and we’ll prove it to you.
Why not? Well for one, you’re repeatedly exposing your body to antibiotics, which changes the biofilm of your intestines causing your body to become over run with bad bacteria, which produces inflammation and toxins, which eventually reach the brain and impair neurogenesis.
In addition, farm raised GMO crop fed U.S. animal meat is unnaturally high in omega 6 fatty acids. Therefore eating it creates an imbalance of the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio in your body, this in turn causes inflammation in the entire system, including the brain. Low-grade inflammation impairs brain function, causing brain fog, which is basically brain cell and receptor death.
So, yeah, eating meat isn’t unnatural or morally wrong by evolutionary standards, but eating factory farmed garbage, over time, may very well warp your brain. The science is all there for you to go dig up, if you so choose to investigate.
And these kinds of things are why we maintain that you can’t just pop nootropics all day and think you’re going to automatically create your most perfect brain. Without working hard on your lifestyle you will probably not make incredible progress like you should. However, if you work at things and take your nootropics there is a massive synergistic effect.
